Attractive cake serving platter on stem in porcelain, with floral Pompadour decoration in black and turquoise, of the Aesthetic Movement style; antique English 19th century.

Aesthetic style was very popular in the 1870s and 1880s. The homewares in Aesthetic fashion were elegantly designed and useful; the decoration had to be aesthetic, which meant elegant, tasteful and not garish. Design elements were inspired by the imports of ceramics, lacquer furniture and fabrics from the Far East.

How to care
Avoid washing gilded and overglaze painted ceramics in a dishwasher. Tiny sand particles in the water will eventually make the decoration look dull.
How to care
Porcelain, ironstone and pottery are tough materials. Wash all ceramics normally in a warm water with a sponge. Be gentle with overglaze decorations.
